Constance Edwards Scopelitis
Constance has a fine arts degree from Indiana University. Her formal training continued at the Art Students League in NYC and culminated in the award of a Fellowship Grant to the Vermont Studio Center for “Emerging American Artists”.
Constance describes her work as “passionate and driven”. She says, “I have been bound by an historical standard of precision and skill in the world of portraiture. These experiences qualify me to gain the likeness of my subject and render the human figure with accuracy. It is this mastery that has kept my portrait business flourishing for more than twenty years.”
Between portrait commissions, Constance creates contemporary figurative paintings that posess a lyrical, dreamlike quality. Her style of magical realism contains neo-classical elements, subliminal imagery and symbols that represent ancient mythology or personal storytelling.
Artist Statement
Constance Edwards Scopelitis approaches her linen canvases with a deliberate color palette. Her imagery comes from a deep psychological place where subliminal narratives emerge through personal icons, mythology and storytelling. The juxtaposition of highly rendered figure work with expressionistic pop culture archetypes creates a rich and vibrant visual experience. No preconceived compositions exist in the creation of these works. The artist keeps sketch books and photo files of the human figure as references for future paintings. She combines these images with symbols of contemporary culture influenced by ad campaigns, fashion, graffiti and sexual politics. In the best of times, the result is a free-fall “psycho pop” experience.
