Christopher Schulz

Sculpture is inherently difficult to write about, because successful sculpture is – by definition -communicating something that goes beyond words. Christopher Schulz is a sculptor who understands that his work must stand alone, comprised of two strands of meaning that are inextricably bound together. On one hand there is the meaning that emerges from his exploration of his material, his experimentation with form, and the inexplicable filtering of his own emotional and intellectual experiences: and on the other, there is the meaning that springs from the viewer’s own interaction with the work – as individual and as infinitely varied as the viewer themselves. Both are valid, both are vital and neither one should be necessarily colored or influenced by the other.

Christopher Schulz is an artist who wants his audience to trust their ,own instinctive response, to understand that their response is as much a part of what the work is about as any thought that motivated him during its creation. This is the essential magic of art, and like magic, it is elusive, understood in an intuitive way, but rarely surviving any intellectualized dissection. Allow yourself the freedom to experience this sculpture in your own unique way.

Just as a poet can distill a complex idea, and reduce volumes of meanings to just a few richly laden words, so Christopher can take the abstract and complex, and refine it until it exists as pure form. He is drawn to the endless mystery, beauty and challenge of the human form, but increasing1y, he is incorporating other elements, hoping to surprise himself. An artist who takes risks, who acts on impulse, without a clearly defined image in his mind of the finished piece, will inevitably make new discoveries. It is beyond the boundaries of the known and familiar that art takes on the role of intrepid explorer, and makes its contribution to our collective history.

Constance Edwards Scopelitis

Constance has a fine arts degree from Indiana University. Her formal training continued at the Art Students League in NYC and culminated in the award of a Fellowship Grant to the Vermont Studio Center for “Emerging American Artists”.

Constance describes her work as “passionate and driven”. She says, “I have been bound by an historical standard of precision and skill in the world of portraiture. These experiences qualify me to gain the likeness of my subject and render the human figure with accuracy. It is this mastery that has kept my portrait business flourishing for more than twenty years.”

Between portrait commissions, Constance creates contemporary figurative paintings that posess a lyrical, dreamlike quality. Her style of magical realism contains neo-classical elements, subliminal imagery and symbols that represent ancient mythology or personal storytelling.

Artist Statement

Constance Edwards Scopelitis approaches her linen canvases with a deliberate color palette. Her imagery comes from a deep psychological place where subliminal narratives emerge through personal icons, mythology and storytelling. The juxtaposition of highly rendered figure work with expressionistic pop culture archetypes creates a rich and vibrant visual experience. No preconceived compositions exist in the creation of these works. The artist keeps sketch books and photo files of the human figure as references for future paintings. She combines these images with symbols of contemporary culture influenced by ad campaigns, fashion, graffiti and sexual politics. In the best of times, the result is a free-fall “psycho pop” experience.
