The Power of Seduction

Las Vegas, Nevada, September 10, 2009 — Brett Wesley Contemporary Art Gallery announces the exhibition for The Power of Seduction. Join us Thursday, September 10, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for the first show in the newly design and built gallery located at 1112 Casino Center Blvd. on the corner of Charleston. The Power of Seduction, features Las Vegas artist Kevin Chupik, sculptor Gerard Basil Stripling from Laguna, California, and vintage photographer, author and filmmaker Lawrence Schiller from San Diego.

Lawrence Schiller was born in 1936 in Brooklyn, and grew up in San Diego. After graduating from Pepperdine College, he went to work for Life Magazine and the Saturday Evening Post as a photojournalist. He published his first book, LSD, in 1966. Since then he has published eleven books. He had directed seven motion pictures and miniseries for television; The Executioner’s Song and Peter the Great won five Emmys. In 2007, he exhibited his 1960s photographs for the first time in New York city Marilyn Monroe and America in the 1960s and since then the exhibition has toured Beijing, China; Sofia, Bulgaria; Hong Kong; Salzburg, Austria; Berlin, Germany; Miami, Florida and London.

Kevin Chupik grew up in the “Cold War” era, where the ever-present specter of Soviet domination seemed real. Looking back through the lens of time, the “enemy” then, now seems quite human, even affable to the point of attractive. Chupik’s paintings, are knitted together by a myriad of quietly placed brushstrokes shaped as squares, squiggles, dashes and dots, which seem quite docile compared our current enemy.  Kevin moved from Colorado to Las Vegas in 1997 and has been teaching painting, drawing and design at the College of Southern Nevada. A lifetime of interest in imagery, history, language, and travel has fed numerous bodies of work, spanning the last two decades.

Gerard Basil Stripling creates extraordinary abstract sculptures in bronze. Through his very personal musings or his worldly observations, he expresses the thoughts, feelings and dreams we experience every day through shape, color and form. Stripling’s sculptures have also grown larger in size, awarding him four Public Art pieces throughout Southern California. He was recently selected as an emerging artist to watch by American Style Magazine. Basil grew up in the heart of LA and now lives in Laguna Beach, California.
