A man of many talents, Robert Arnold expresses them in his ceramic, wood, and letterpress workshop. He is entirely self-taught and seeks out the challenge within the process of creation. His newest collection is a series of animated stabiles using beautiful materials in unexpected ways. These handcrafted sculptures incorporate a variety of local and exotic woods, industrial felt, and stainless steel. All of the stabiles are made using a lathe, rotating the wood pieces to create objects of grace, symmetry, and balance.
His influences in woodwork include Shaker with its clean, economic lines and Arts and Crafts design. In his ceramics he is partial to Scandinavian and Japanese work. The common thread in all of these influences is simplicity: simplicity in design, function and construction. He believes in creating pieces that people will enjoy and interact with.
