Big Words Exhibition 2012
The concept of failure reigns constant in Eric Burwell’s oeuvre. Burwell does not view himself as a failure, or his paintings. Exploring what constitutes a failure, he deals with the idea of artistic deficiency in his paintings and in the process of making the work. Burwell speaks to an art world that has not decided what painting in 21st century is. By adding the concept of failure to the discussion, he contributes to the question, and especially the reinvention of painting.
Eric’s work in this series of large scale paintings is bold, gritty, dramatic and intellectual. Some of Burwell’s mark-making choices are intentional, some spontaneous, and others occur gradually as the painting develops. Works are on unstretched canvas to be consistent with the raw and informal aspect that is the core of Burwell's painting style.
