Luis Varela-Rico is an aspiring industrial designer that was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. He has been a resident of Las Vegas for over twenty years. His life has always been filled with a curiosity of how things are made and how they function. This curiosity eventually uncovered a certain creativeness that has never had any boundaries. The combination of both has pushed him to be mechanically inclined, a certified welder, and overall craftsman. He enjoys creating things that work well while feathering them with his graphic aesthetic. He prefers creating forms that have function and is attracted to timeless long-lasting designs. His main influences are the Minimalist, Bauhaus, and Modernist movements. Luis has a Associates in Art and has spent some time at UNLV studying art.

Artist Statement

I’m looking to bring two worlds together. On one hand you have paper. It is a material known for its lightness, relative flexibility, and delicate nature. On the other hand you have steel. It is a heavy industrious material born from fire breathing factories. A feeling of strength is automatically evoked when thinking of the material. It is synonymous with the industrial revolution and our county’s infrastructure. I aim to make a direct correlation with paper and steel.  My goal is to give metal the delicate quite nature of paper and give paper the strength and rigidity of steel.  I’ve stumbled upon what I think to be a great meeting place where these two materials could exchange characteristics and sometimes becoming one and the same. This common ground is known as origami.
